After months of dedicated work, we are overjoyed to announce that the rebuilt Deep Time Walk app has been released and is now live on both iOS and Android!
This is not an update – it is a completely new app, redesigned from the ground up. It lays the foundation for something we have dreamed about for a long time: a platform able to carry many different walking narratives, each contextualised to its own local geology, biosphere and human culture. This is the start of an exciting new chapter, bringing Deep Time Walks to more people all over the world.
At its heart is still the experience that anyone, anywhere in the world, can walk 4.6 billion years of Earth history in a single 4.6 km walk. But there is so much that is new:
- Rich, illustrative graphics from leading palaeo-artists around the world
- A completely new interface that lets you swipe and scrub between different segments of Deep Time
- A time-contextual glossary that explains key terms as they arise across Earth history
- A new interactive map to discover in-person, facilitator-led walks happening near you – and register to join them. This also gives the ability to see historical walks that have taken place in your location – all drawn from our Camino walks management system (see below)
- A walking mode that uses GPS to sense your pace and distance and adapts the narrative to you
- A listening mode so that anyone, whether or not they are able to walk, can experience the narrative
- You can now walk in segments – especially useful for schools and universities, with the app remembering where you left off
- A single-earbud (Gaiaphonic) mode, so you can keep one ear on the narrative and one on the living world around you
- Contextual actions at the end of the walk, which can be tailored to where the walk is experienced, helping turn reflection into local, positive action
This process has taken longer than we first envisaged. Bringing an app of this ambition to life meant navigating some significant challenges (it includes a new authoring tool, server and api as well as these new mobile apps!) and we are grateful for your patience.
To everyone who supported the original crowdfunding campaign a decade ago – thank you. Your encouragement and generosity helped launch the first version, with its acclaimed narrative written by Dr Stephan Harding and Peter Oswald. We hope this second version honours that beginning and becomes a launchpad for reaching many more people, in many more places.
Download the app today. We would love to hear what you think – do share your reflections with us, and please feel free to forward this news to friends, colleagues and anyone who might like to walk.
