Deep Time Line
A summary of Earth’s 4.6bn year history.
The Deep Time Line gives a graphical overview of the major revolutions that have occurred across Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history, providing a useful summary of the geological events and evolutionary leaps that have led to life on Earth today. The high-quality 15cm x 5cm bookmark sized card includes over 30 key events including the formation of the moon, the Late Heavy Bombardment, Snowball Earth, the development of eukaryotes and multicellular life, The Cambrian Explosion, the evolution of vertebrates, plants, amphibians, mammals and dinosaurs. The five red triangles illustrate when the last mass extinctions occurred on Earth.
The other side of the timeline zooms into the last 100,000 years of human history using a 10cm ruler. With 1cm = 10,000 years, it is the same scale that is used in the 4.6km Deep Time Walk, where each metre represents one million years. These last 10 centimetres put into context the very recent arrival of modern humans on Earth. The ruler illustrates the timing of key human innovations, including cave art, woven textiles, houses, clay pottery, animal domestication, the agricultural revolution and the building of Stonehenge and the Pyramids. With the industrial revolution occurring at just the last 1/5thof a single millimetre it puts into perspective how, in the blink of an eye, humans are changing Earth’s climate to devastating effect.
This timeline of Earth history is a useful reference for those that wish to have a quick summary of the critical events that have shaped our Earth’s 4.6bn year journey. It is a useful complement for people downloading the Deep Time Walk App or can be as a memento for those participating in a community-led Deep Time Walk.
